‘Reconnecting: A Graphic Novel about Inclusion’ is a project created in collaboration with young people who are telling their own personal stories surrounding either inclusion or exclusion, and how they overcame this.

The young people worked with staff to write their own stories in detail and then brainstormed ideas with us illustrators as to how they want their pages to look like.

Each young person had a specific look they wanted their comic to have, such as the student behind, ‘The VR Tragedy’ wanted their section to feel like a videogame as most of their story takes place in a virtual world. So, to achieve this I used an 8-bit style similar to that from Five Nights at Freddy’s. Whereas the student writing ‘First Day’ wanted a more classic cartoon style representing their story.

1. PROJECT BRAINSTORMING

I have included my initial storyboards and sketches I completed during in person sessions with the young people, where we discussed how to bring their ideas to life with their exact vision in mind. I began by taking lots of notes during our conversation, then sketching out some of the key scenes and brainstorming with them to make sure they were always involved in the process.
